My 1989 vette has been sitting for some time. I moved out of state and when I moved back this year and pulled her out of storage, she ran really rough. She runs like she isn't hitting on all cyl or her plug wires are crossed. Wires can't be crossed though... I haven't touched them. I noticed the other day when I was working under her hood that after I ran her for about 2 or 3 minutes, the pipe near the pre cat (firewall area) was glowing red. Any suggestions? Also does anyone know where the cooling fan switch is located at on the engine? When I parked her a few years ago, the fan didn't want to turn on when it should, so I thought I would replace it. I replaced the one by the thermostat (temp gauge switch) but can't find the one for the cooling fan.
You need to figure out which cylinders aren't firing. You can unplug the injectors one at a time and see which ones don't cause the engine to run rougher.
Just push the metal wire in and then pull the harness off? I can't let my car idle more than a few minutes... the pipes get red hot. I have a water hose next to me on standby. I will give it a shot and let you know what I find out. Thanks for your help.
I do think my cats are plugged. There is air blowing out tailpipe, but the exhaust pipes after exhaust manifold are red hot. Would they make the car run horrible even at idle? I had a car that had a plugged cat, but it ran fine, just wouldn't drive over 35mph.
