Default Help me order the right MSD wires please!

Hey guys,

Just about to place an order with summit but i'm stuck on something.

The wires i currently have are Accel 8.8 that go under the headers. I'd like to get a set of MSD 8.5 wires that go over the valve covers. I called MSD and of course they said well it comes stock with straight boots and they go under the headers.

They told me to buy thier universal kit part number 31239
http://www.summitracing.com/parts/MSD-31239/

But in talking with Jim(tpi_421_vette) He was telling me to just get a set that is designed for a chevy 350 (not necessarily a vette) that goes under the headers and has all angled boots. Here are the 3 i found and was wondering if anyone had any experience or used any of these or knew if they would work!

Some of them come with the coil wire, which i obviously don't need. Figured i'd just set that aside and the rest of the wires would fit right up.

Thanks in advance
-Caleb

You'll see in the listing that it says specifically that it goes over the valve covers

Caleb, I know Jim knows what he's talking about, but I always order a universal set and custom cut each wire to length. It makes for a neater engine compartment. I use the Taylor 10.5 wires and even make the wires up so the direction of the boot is correct since these things are thick and do not like being twisted. My .02. Willie

Caleb, I said get a set of wires that goes over the valve covers, not under the headers. they make a universal SBC over the valve cover wire set.

And like Wille said, if you want to get a cut to length set, you can make them fit perfect.

Willie is right, I always buy the universal set. That way you can get what boot type you want and make the job look very neat. I have custom wire looms and try to follow the OEM routing on my L98. Mine are routed along the side of the valve cover just above the exhaust manifold. I would suggest you get some looms as well. They help keep everything from getting burned and help keep arcing between wires to a minimum. I dunno about fitting plug wires and headers but the principles should be the same.

Good luck!

Tay-79051. These are universal, black Thundervolt-50 wires. 90 degree boots. 10.4mm. Cut to length. These are so big you can use them as tow straps in a pinch. Willie

Go w the taylor wires.

Msd spark arc'd at boot junction when brand new.

If it has the msd name on it you can guarantee its garbage. (Ex. Msd opti )

Whch is a change from how they got started. Someone clearly bought them for the name.

All this said, my msd-6btm seems to be working fine (though I need to test the boost retard function w a timing light to verify it works before relying on it to save an engine from detonating under boost)

look it up and youll see MSD has a bad rep here. i used them and first had problems getting the boots to lock onto the plugs. then i had some slight arcing when brand new. then when i went to take them off to do my opti 2 of them just tore apart. looked it up and found alot of others having similar problems with MSD. i went with some taylor 8mms and havnt had a single problem. that was over a year ago.

My new MSD 8.5s arc against the Superram fresh out of the box. I had to wrap them in electrical tape around the boot.

Yes terrible. The race cars I see typically always have 2 msd boxes within reach of the driver.

In a racecar, where every ounce of weight counts, they choose to run 2 boxes in case one fails.

I prefer the Taylor's as well.

Also, if you are making your own wires, make sure you have a good quality crimper.
