OK, for those of you who have done this before did you put the seal on the pan and put those up as one piece, or did you put the seal on the block, and if so, how did you hold it up while installing the pan? They gave me four nice corner post "holds" with the fel-pro gasket kit I got but the damn things are so long in the front that I can't get the pan to clear them. If you used a tacky adhesive to hold the gasket on what type did you use? What's the trick? Thanks.
I've used a floor jack to gently hold it up till I get 4 bolts in snug and then remove the floor jack and finish. My last pan 'canton' was a piece of cake that way.
Put permatex grey rtv in the 4 corners and on the arches, top and bottom. The sticks should work fine. Try using them further back or trimming them down. Or flor jack. Better yet pull the motor and do it on a stand
Thanks for the tips, guys. I used one of the plastic sticks on the front right, cut down a good bit, and then left the normal studs in the rear. It worked pretty well.
I haven't done the pan gasket (yet) on my '86, but on previous small block gaskets I've seen that they make some of the holes in the gaskets slightly smaller in diameter. You can "screw" the bolts into those holes and they will be held in place by the gasket, which also holds the gasket in the right position.
