Default Oil level sensor ?

How can you get the old gasket out without breaking it off inside the oil pan.

Can't you just unscrew it? If you break it it's cheap, like under $10.

You missed my point, if it breaks it will end up inside my pan and I really do not want that to happen.

It should come straight out. It could be catching on your oil pick up tube.

I DO KNOW that if you just try to force the pan off it will break and lay in the pan. That's not a rumor....it's a fact. Won't it unscrew and slide right out? What seems to be the problem?

Does not look like the gasket unscrews, looks like it is pressed on when the sensor is tightened.
I pulled the old sensor off and the gasket is hard as a rock and just turns.

Your question wasn't clear. The sensor can be removed and the gasket is a replaceable item. A quick parts search will show you that.

From what I remember the seal/gasket is just external, it should pry off with a screwdriver.

The gasket is a simple o-ring that compresses against the outside of the pan. There is no way for it to fall off inside the pan.

Jim, it was different on the earlier sensors, more like the coolant crossover seals.

I have pried on mine (not hard) and it has not budged, I am going to pry harder and if a piece goes into my pan. Going to make you guys come over and get it out.

The original on the '96 was that way too Just had to scrape the thing off the outside of the pan. There was nothing inside the hole.

What exactly are you prying on? The gasket or the sensor itself? The sensor threads into the pan. The gasket, flat or o-ring style, fits over the threads of the oil level sensor and presses flat against the outside of the pan. If the gasket is stuck, then screw the sensor into the pan a couple threads. Then use a gasket scraper or a brand new <=== important razor and ***gently*** tap/scrape around the perimeter of the gasket. Don't whack it because if it lets go you'll slam the scraper or razor into the sensor and likely break it.

Sensor was out and was using a screw driver to pry the seal off by placing the screwdriver under the seal and prying out.
