Default Window Ribbon Replacement on 84

How easy/hard is replacing a power window ribbon on an 84 vette? Any hints or helpful tidbits for when I get my grubby little hands on this project?

Thanks

if it is like my 85, the best advive i can give is to measure the old one against the new one before you get it installed in the door. i took the motor and window out. the window was a little tricky, but not a big deal. i got it all together and had to re-do it because i did not cut the new ribbon to length and the window would not roll all the way down. my local chevy place had the replacement for within a few dollars of ordering one. good luck!

do yourself a favor. Get a complete late model window regulator form a junk yard and do away with the ribbon system. For $50-100 you'll have a window that moves much faster and you wont have to worry about the ribbon breaking again.

I replaced the driver side with the newer scissors type. Hardest part was aligning the window. Still not perfect but good enough for now. My new part had fairly good instructions with it. You have to drill two new holes in the bottom of the door. Measure 100 times drill once.
This window goes up and down now twice as fast as the passenger side. Every time they race the driver side window wins.
Good luck.

I agree with RED84CF. I replaced the entire mechanism with the late model regulator. Window is still a little tight, I have to conciously close the door. It reguires a little more effort than before.

I got the regulator from Mid-America, a little expensive at $250 but for the difference in smoothness and speed, it was worth it. I'm about to do the passenger side now. I'll check with Jeff Kopp (18carfan) for the price. He normally beats the Heck out of MAD & Ecklers on stock items.

Just did the replacement of the ribbon on the passenger's door window. I agree that you should measure the ribbon to the exact length of the old one. I did not have to take the glass completely out but I did take the entire motor assembly out to re-rivet the window guide together. Measure twice and cut once. Good luck!
