LT4 Backfired, Service Engine Light On

LT4 Backfired, Service Engine Light On
Well, this is a first. My LT4 backfired under acceleration this morning. There was an immediate loss of power, the Service Engine Soon dash light came on, and then the engine power came back. Opened the hood to find that little shreds of my serpentine belt were here and there; around the alternator, on top of the engine, around a spark plug wire, etc. The belt looked like it had about 1/2 of its original width. I just had that belt replaced a year ago by the dealer. Could a belt failure like this cause the engine to miss? Car only has 41K miles on it.
