What else besides the shift cable might cause a complete malfunction of the transmission? No noises when it happened..it just stopped working. Any help would be appreciated.
I'm going to get a little ahead of myself here. I think you threw a band... or two. I threw out my top end band on my 700R4. It would get through 2nd, but 3rd didn't exist. Trans rebuild. Take this chance to either make a beastly auto, or go ahead and swap out for a stick.
The car was at a stoplight when the transmission stopped working. . The engine runs just fine still, but there is no response from the transmission. I have not looked to see if the cable is bad. The car is a friends car not mine , so I was not there when "it " happened.
I got in the car today and started the engine and then moved the shifter thru the gear selection. I could not get it to position in 1st or 2nd ( lever all the way towards the back ). No noises from the transmission. It acts as though it is stuck in neutral.
Thanks for your input

Yep, you blew a band or two. It happens. Take it to a mechanic, and he'll take care of it for a nice little penny. Or, just get a new 5-speed!
Where are you located? There are tons of great mechanics out there, and considering we have a few thousand memebers, I'm sure we can recommend a really good one.

For sure get under the car and make sure the selector cable is actually moving the lever on the drivers side of the trans.
Typically a failure such as you describe is caused by a failed torque converter, front pump or input shaft.
PeteK, the forum trans guru has said that he has seen the converter bolts fall out of the flexplate causing what you describe. Best of luck, hope it is something that simple, but expect it will require trans removal.
