My 1986 is my third project car in the last few years and I am surprised at how few options there are for wheels out there. I've been toying with the idea of an upgrade to 17" wheels, since my BFGs are STILL on back order for 2 more months. I don't really care about keeping the car original. Just looking to do something different. Did any of you do something interesting for wheels? How about some pics? I know spacers can totally open things up and are required to move up to 88-96 wheels. I just wonder if anyone has colored outside the lines on this issue. Thanks!
There are a couple of sets of aftermarket wheels in the parts for sale forum that would fit and look nice. I have ARE Lemans wheels on my 95 and had them on my GS for a while.
I just had a bad tire on my '86 with stock wheels. It was a BF Goodrich. There are none anywhere and Tire Rack is showing that they will not be available until mid September, when BFG does another production run. I ended up buying a used tire, but the guy at the tire store (America's Tire Co.) suggested that I go to a 17" wheel, which would give me many more tire options. The problem with that is that it would cost about $3000 to put new wheels and tires on my car. Another weird one was the guy told me they would not put the wheels on my car if there was an adapter involved (which the stock 17 " wheels require because the offset if different). He said the spacers put too much stress on the wheel studs and they refuse to accept the liability. I understand that there are some aftermarket wheels that have the correct offset and therefore don't need spacers.

You are shopping at the wrong place. For $1,000 I bought 4 new polished 17 inch wheels, new tires, center caps, lugnuts, and locks, shipped to my door.
They were well packed, mounted and road force balanced.
I love those! I was hoping for some folks to respond with some pics of non-stock wheels. Thanks Calderone. I am pretty sure my stock wheels must have been refinished. They are way too nice. I guess in the interest of money I am going to just buy new tires. I started looking at 17 inch wheels while waiting for the BFG tires I ordered. I didn't see very much out there at all other than the usual A mold ZR1 style wheels. Sawblades would require spacers. Torque Thrusts would fit. Very little else in the affordable range. Well, I found that Falken makes the Ziex 512 in my size and just went for it. $420 shipped from Discount Tire Direct. The reviews were decent enough.
I have a set of 17x10 Boyd Coddington Smoothies on my '92. If you want to see them, google "C4orce2" and look for the photobucket. The default album there has several pics showing them.
