My friend just got a 1996 and it runs fine during normal operating conditions sometimes. Other times it starts then bogs and dies at idle, and if you give it a lot of gas it acellerates and dies off and accelerates and dies of. It has a mild performance cam, cats have been removed and flowmasters installed. He is going to do a complete tune up this weekend and hook the scanner up to it but the check engine light is not coming on (it does light up during self check with igntion in on position). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Just about everytime there are symptoms like that, and NO codes are set, its a fuel filter/pump issue. Since the ECM has no way of monitoring fuel other than what it should be doing as far as inj pulse time, IAC, MAF ESPN, ETC...(<-) it simply does not know there is a problem if there is no fuel or low pressure. So, burping, spitting coughing stumbling, the worst of everything and the ECM has no idea that there's a problem.
Do a fuel pressure test and see if its the filter or if its in the tank. Might be some junk injectors too...check the regulator vac for gas and pull a plug or 2 to see what they have to say..(rich, lean, wet)
