got the $40 model at autozone, didn't think I needed the digital one. I had a Penske-Craftsman for 40 years and it still worked, but gave it away a year before I bought the 91.

I will use if a half dozen times. Better to borrow or rent one, but could not locate one. it is lightweight, induction pickup, and looks like a Star Trek stunner.

I think I got mine at a auto parts store when I had a C3. Still use it for prelimenary spark checking. Anything with a battery hookup and a clamp to fit over plug wire is fine for me.
I remember the primitive old style w/o battery hookup and you had to put it inline with plug and boot. Those good ole bad days......

I have an old Craftsman one that has electronic spark advance on it. Dial in how much you want and set the car at what "appears" to be zero/TDC.

Takes all the variances out of the degree markers...pretty accurate that way.

Snap On 1261 Digital Advance Timing light is what I own & use.

I have owned it since 1991.

Still works like new & never has failed me.

Costed me around $250 back then.

Same model made yet today in more modern casing for $400.00

Snap On 1261 Timing light is the standard of all Pro engine builders & veteran racers around the world.

Dead On accurate.

I take good care of mine like a fine C4 Corvette.

I use a Craftsman also with the electronic advance feature, I retired an old Sun that I had bought many years ago when the name Sun still meant something. I really like the Craftsman, I've had it now just over a year.
I remember the old ones mentioned where you had to put an adapter between the spark plug & the wire, you couldn't see the beam in a well lit garage and forget using it outside unless it was night time.

Has anyone come up with a good pointer to take the readings from the front hub?

I always paint the timing groove on my balancers white, then put a small dot or stripe on the tab right on the degree mark I set it to. Makes life a lot easier.

Mine is a different animal. It is an LT1 with rear mount distributor I don't have any pointer on my LT1 engine. Was trying to come up with a good, inexpensive pointer so I could check the computers timing against actual.
