Default ZF6 magnets, how do they work?

Well, here is the $5,000 magnet :

This transmission failed because the magnet that is supposed to be glued to the inside of the case came loose, got caught in the gears, and flung up into the shift rail. The caused the transmission to get stuck in reverse while the shifter became stuck in neutral.

I have read about this happening before, and guessed that it could have been my problem too, now I know.

I cannot disassemble the transmission further without removing a permanent seal plug, so I will save any other play time for the future if I feel like taking that on.

Now I can shift the the transmissions into all forward gears just fine. I still could not get it into reverse, but without and actual shift lever, it is quite difficult with this transmission. Even with a shift lever, this transmission was always difficult to get into reverse because of its passive lockout.
