Diacom with Win XP?
Trusty tuning Thinkpad died so loaded Diacom on a Compaq dual boot (XP /98 ) laptop.
Diacom runs as usual under Win 98 but will not connect through XP using same port config as 98.
Sees cable but sticks on "linking".
Just interested in if I am holding my mouth the wrong way or if Diacom will not work with XP as it is a DOS based program.
No biggy , can datalog with Win 98 and tune through XP but need to run XP because no Compaq Win 98 drivers available to activate the USB ports needed for Ostrich and Moates chip burner.
FWIW
Still using Diacom because Diacom logs can be opened in Datamaster to give latest style user friendly GUI with clearer graphing of inputs.
My understanding is that Diacom can't get control of the parallel port if Windows installs its driver before Diacom. I'm running Win 98 but I have it set up to boot into DOS so I can run Diacom before Windows gets control.
I don't remember how to boot to a DOS prompt. My Compaq has this weird setup where it saves the operating state to disk on every shutdown so it doesn't use AUTOEXEC.BAT or CONFIG.SYS when it boots. Anyhow, my (vague) recollection is that you put WINBOOT=FALSE (or something like that) in your AUTOEXEC.BAT. I never tried this with Windows XP, but I do know that AUTOEXEC.BAT & CONFIG.SYS exist in XP, but they're both empty. If you don't believe that XP boots through DOS, pound on the ESC key when you first turn on your machine.
Maybe you could rename or move the XP parallel port driver so it won't be installed on boot.
My Compaq Presario laptop has a USB port and runs Win 98, so there must be drivers out there. Try www.driverguide.com
I'd like to get a DOS USB driver so I can save Diacom files to it. I heard that they exist but are VERY difficult to install.
1. Obtain access to MSDOS.SYS in the root of drive c as follows:
ATTRIB -S -H -R MSDOS.SYS
2. Edit msdos.sys using the dos editor:
EDIT MSDOS.SYS
change BOOTGUI=1 to BOOTGUI=0
and save the file.
3. Reset the attributes using:
ATTRIB +S +H +R MSDOS.SYS
After doing this you will boot to a DOS prompt. You need to type "win" at the DOS prompt to go into Windows.
