Yep, and it's much easier if you have access to a lift. Sensors take (I think) an 18mm wrench.

They now sell O2 sensor socket removal tools at Autozone & O'Reileys & Advanced Auto for under $20.

Makes the task of changing out O2 sensors much easier than using an open end wrench.

The downstream O2 sensor checks performance of the catalytic converter, have you monitored sensor voltage with a scan tool? Upstream and downstream sensors are the same on a 96, if removal does not turn into a nightmare you can try swapping the sensors then see if the same code resets. If it does, you likely need a new cat.

Do almost exactly as TopTechx6 says, but leave the O2s in place, just swap the plugs between the 2, so if the sensor IS faulty, you will likely get both codes, if it is NOT faulty, the downstream sensor should still read exhaust O2 levels well enough not to set a DTC. Youll still get the code for the downstream cause itll be reading the upstream flow, and comparing it to the downstream flow, instead of the other way around.

Cant be certain on that, but its worth a shot, so if the cables will reach to swap, try that.
