Default idle problems

i have an 86 with surging idle problem. i recently found a chewed up wire ,chipmonks, i repaired it thinking it would solve the problem but it didn't. should i disconnect the neg battery cable for a minute to see if the ecu resets its self?

What wire was it? A picture would help us a lot. You need to check for vacuum leaks, make sure the fuel pressure is around 40 psi, and check ignition system.

There's a connector right next to the positive battery terminal. It goes directly to the ECM, so you just need to open it for a couple of seconds to reset the ECM.

It's a lot easier to open that connector than to disconnect a battery cable - and requires no tools.

Default vacum ga/timing light and meter

have 85 corvette that had surging then high idle gave me fits but follow what these guys tell you put your jumper on a and b pull your codes then disc iac then unplug dist wire by master cyl at that time set timing to 4 to 6 btdc set idle at 450 then check voltage on tps but the one thing that helped me was a vacum ga will tell you alot about what is happening if you get a good steady 19 to 20 lbs your timing and hoses are probaly ok I also cleaned my tb real easy to do and only cost about 10.00 with gasket and cleaner
