Where is the gas filter located on a 89 corvette conv
i never had an 89, but i have had an 85 and a 90. on both cars the filter was located on the right hand frame rail near the starter. not sure if the x-member is in the way on the verts - ??? - L98 cars in general are fairly easy to change - just make sure you disconnect the battery, and use flair-nut wrenches.
I've heard that it's hidden above the X-member. The fuel lines are on the inside of the passenger side frame rail. Follow them and you're bound to find it eventually.
Watch out for siphoning of the fuel out of the tank when you open the connection to the fuel filter. It's best to take the gas cap off to prevent the pressure in the tank from pushing the fuel out. If this turns out to be a problem, disconnect the fuel line at the tank. It's under the rubber boot around the fuel filler neck.
Not all '87 C4's had the return filter. My 87 coupe does not have one. IIRC, 87 was the only year where two filters were installed.
It would help to remove the X-brace as it's pretty difficult to get wrenches up there especially if you don't have a lift.
It helps to raise the front of the car as high as possible before swapping the filter. Do the swap with the least amount of gas in the tank as possible. Remove the fuel pump fuse and start the engine and let it die; that should remove a lot of fuel from the lines and will reduce the pressure. Once the engine dies, turn the key off. If you have a fuel pressure gauge, attach it to the Schrader valve on the fuel rail and release any pressure.
This was one job that I let my mechanic do, since I don't have a lift and didn't want to spill gas all over the place. As luck would have it, he had trouble removing both filters. he thought that they were originals. He replaced the feed filter with much trouble and then soaked the return filter's fittings with WD 40 or something like that. Went back 2 weeks later and he finally got that one off and replaced.
