Default flywheel as ereluctor wheel

can you use the flywheel as a reluctor ring for building a dis ignition system, bypassing mounting a ring on the crank pulley to cut cost, fab time and energy.

Anything is possible with time, money and ingenuity.

Chrysler uses the flywheel as the reluctor on some vehicles.

once I learn if there is a certain necessary amount of teeth, then I can start making a dis system for my car with as little hacking as possible. Cost is very important since I'm not big money. The whole purpose is to get rid of that damn opti, wir e routing andcoil. The dis is way more accurate. I know there are delteq and the c5 conversion but either they are'nt in business or tooooo expensive. In Baltimore I have the luxury of several pick and pull yards. My greatest expense will be the aftermarket computer.

You'll not only need to count reluctor teeth, but you'll also need a reference indication of some sort. Counting is great, but you need to know what you're counting from, or toward. TDC on #1 cylinder, or some such reference will also be required.

I can't fault you for wishing to ditch the Opti. It has its weaknesses, but accuracy isn't one of them. The Opti, when functioning normally, delivers exceptionally accurate camshaft position, velocity and acceleration signals to the ECM/PCM.

The Opti would have been an ideal timing system, if it had used coilpacks rather than a distributor, and had its optical wheel bolted hard to the camshaft sprocket, rather than spinning on its own axle. This would have eliminated the cap and rotor, simplified plug wire routing, and eliminated the Opti shaft bearings as a point of failure (which commonly occurs soon after an Opti takes a coolant bath).

The Delteq and LTCC systems solve all of these problems except for the bearing issue.

Live well,

SJW
