Are you certain the core is bad? Leaking inside the cabin?? if its just lack of hot air there are a doz things that cause that in the C4.

Few things are as much fun...

Its as much a PITA as it looks....pull all that stuff off the housing thats under the hood. Remove everything necessary to provide the room to split the case.
Separate the case halves...trade out cores. Good time to clean and reseal the evap housing and ducts. Its not horrible if you can just get started...

A FSM would be very helpful with the step by step process...

I sold a car once rather than do the heater core....

It is....
Once you get started it goes fairly quick. In reality it looks worse than it is just because of how the box is situated under the hood. If it were me designing the thing I would have split the cases horizontally so the top half could come off easily and the evap and heater core simply lifted out instead of this vertical seam thats more cramped and awkward to separate.

Something that I have learned from sore backs and such, is that pulling a front wheel and the wheel well liners sometimes gives you the access to make it go faster and easier...Thats how I do plugs on that side. Tired of bleeding and throwing tools from frustration while working on the passenger side engine bay.....

Some bad info going on in this thread. You have to remove the dash pad, the passenger side kick panel, the metal panel under the kick panel, the plastic support bar for the wires, the air bag, unplug all the wiring under the passenger side of the dash, the 5 or 6 small gold bolts that hold the heater core case together, two bolts on one of the round vents connected to the heater case, pull the cover off the case, remove 1 gold screw from heater core strap. Head on outside and remove the 2 bolts that hold the surge tank on, push it out of the way, remove the 2 heater hoses from the firewall, go back inside the car and pull the heater out. Reverse all you did. Heater core can never ever ever come out from the engine bay ( unless you cut your firewall out lol)

You're right !

I totally spaced out and failed to take note of the year and the fact that he has the air bag and has to go thru the inside...more stuff to deal with.
I was thinking of earlier C4s (80s into early 90) that were split case outside. Even with that, I'm thinking evaporator and not heater....

I apologize for the misinformation, however, knowing the correct method of removal does'nt make this task any easier...its still a PITA.

I am just finishing replacing mine BEFORE it caused a big mess. This post was the most helpful for my 95. I wanted to add just a little more to it. I took a picture of the heater core cover that you will have to wrestle out, and on it there are red circles where the small 5.5mm screws/bolts holding it in place are. I also made 2 blue circles where 2 more 5.5mm screws are that I removed to help the cover come out.

Also noteworthy is that the heater core itself has an additional 5.5 at the top holding it in, so don't forget that one. Good writeup Samhain!

By the way, I know this thread is several months old but it was very helpful and my post was relevant.
