I put on a set of headers a few months back and noticed a week or two later my car had developed an oil leak. It never smokes, but there is a noticable smell at idle and after I turn it off. It also burns about a quart every 800 miles or so. I've checked what I could (hoses and visable seals) and couldn't find the leak, just lots of oil from under the headers back to the tranny pan. I believe it's the rear main seal. Could it be something else (related to the header install)...and if not, anyone have a ball park on how much it'll cost me for the rear main?
I have a similar oil "pattern" recently from my '88 L98.
A GM dealer recently quoted about $530 labor + the $20 seal, since mine is a 1-piece seal that requires dropping the exhaust system and pulling the tranny. You may be lucky enough to have a 2-piece rear seal.
Meanwhile I have the intake off and just sealed the oil sender tubing and will pay attention to the intake rear seal and dist seal as it was a little oily back there.
I'm sure you checked the valve cover gaskets? I know it sounds simple but my 85 seems to eat these things up. The first sign is the burning oil smell at idle, usually on the drivers side. Hope this helps.
