Default 1990 L98 Temps

Ok, have an issue, but not sure I have a problem. Just replaced my instrument panel, (used) appears to be working. Replaced my water pump Koolflow and thermostat 160 degree. Also did a bunch of other work, intake manifold gaskets, new clutch, throwout bearing, spark plug wires.

My temps are running right at 220 at the bottom of the temp guage, what should it be running. On my old instrument panel, before all the work the temp was showing about half way on the guage. (Replaced the instrument cluster because of the LCD, Mechanical readouts had seemed to be fine).

Is there way to verify the temp readings?

Those inferred temp guns from Harbor Freight & Sears will tell you if the gauges are correct or not.
Some can be bought for $20.

Measure at the thermostat housing with the engine fully warmed up and compare to the dash gauge.

You can also check the top radiator hose & water pump housing.

If you have an ALDL cable, the ECM gets (and will show) the temp at the front of the manifold. Plug in a PC with TunerPro to see it.

Mine reads in the 180-190 range though the sensor in the heads shows 10-15 degrees higher. I have a 180 stat.
