87 Help! Not shifting!
Just as my title states, I broke a shifter cable and replaced it today. When I tested the shift, each gear clicked fine. When I ran the car, the tranny won't shift out of 1st gear, while I am in Overdrive. It won't shift to any other gear except Park, Neutral, and OD (1st gear only).
Dumb additional question, but would low tranny fluid create this problem?

Check the transmission fluid level in Park & top off as needed.
If the transmission was shifting OK before,
Then likely the new shifter cable is out of adjustment yet.
Try readjusting it again.
Adjust the shift cable in while the trans is in Park.
Then recheck by shifting to Reverse, Neutral, Overdrive, Drive, 2nd, 1st.
If you cant reach 1st gear then readjust the shift cable till you can.
Then recheck each gear range again.
Also make sure the TV cable is hooked up to the throttle arm & is adjusted correct.
If the trans still wont shift out 1st gear in Overdrive range,
then maybe the Governor is at fault.
Sometimes after removing the large tin cover on the driver's side on by the extension housing,
You can clean the governor with a can of carb cleaner & free up the sliding valve inside.
If the driven gear on the governor is apple cored rounded off,
you can just replace the green plastic gear.
Its still available from GM & aftermarket transmission suppliers.
Or you can just replace the old governor with a New one.

Thank you for the insight, this AM I added trans fluid and still no joy. I will check the adjustment on the cable again, it appeared I had it pretty much set yesterday when I tested the adjustments but will re-check. I got to looking at the new shift cable, there isnt the same adjustment option as the stock cable, still having trouble looking for the place on the new cable to adjust.
