Default 84 help:high idle

HELP PLEASE. High idle when car starts.(11-1200 RPM) Does not throttle down. 0-25 hesitates then runs real smooth. Any suggestions on what to check?
Appreciate any one's experience with this
Thanks J

You have a vacuum leak. Find and fix the vacuum leak and the high idle will go away, the hesitation may go away (Check your fuel pressure for that if it persists) and the engine will run better in general. Fix the vacuum leak(s)!

The 84s have an odd style coolant temp sensor that is troublesome, wiggle it to see if the idle changes. Its under the air pump, screws into the intake. You can retrofit a newer style sensor/connector if you feel its a problem. I think the 85s started using them.

This is definitely the problem I replaced my temp sensor and now it idles perfect. It is not a vacuum leak

Thank you for your advice. The sensor at the front of the block driver side...I pulled the connector off while running and no change in idle....if that's the one does that indicate it is bad?
Thanks, Joe

Wrong coolant sensor. You just "checked" your coolant gauge sensor. The CTS for the ECM is located on the front of the intake, slightly to the passengers side.
FYI, 11-1200 RPM is normal for a cold start up on a CFI car.
