AS some of you recall I blew a head gasket a few weeks ago and it caused my motor to get real hot. Well I finally got the heads off and it was not a blown head gasket but rather a slight galvanic (sp?) reaction in the water jacket right around the fire ring on the head gasket. So bottom line, the machine shop I use thinks they can fix the head and will check the other one and do a full valve job. But at this point Im thinking since I have the heads off why not do some quick performance stuff. So any suggestions? Im thinking things like timming chain, roller rockers (1.6?), TPI mods, etc. Im not sure I want to do the cam but Im open at this point.
Some other info, its a 1988 L-98 with TPI and 107K miles. I did a compression check and all were within 5% of 150psi, and the cyl. walls look great. No reason (at least at this point) to believe that anything in the bottom end is other than perfect.
I would suggest new head bolts if it got really hot and to have the heads pressure tested. Mine had small cracks in the middle of each head. The shop welded them up, resurfaced, and did the valve job. No problems. You might also want to consider new valve springs. My timing chain looked pretty good at 113,000 miles. If you want to spend some more money do a cam and timing chain. If you do 1.6 rockers you will need to modilfy the underside of the stock valve covers so they don't hit.
Joe, weekendwrench has you headed in the right direction. Definitely do a cam. Plan on a cam that will match your final induction package. If you want to spend a few extra bucks have the machinest port the heads. Further, if a SuperRam or larger runners, like SLP, AS&M or Edelbrock, are in your future I'd pic up an Accel base intake and have it also port matched to the same intake gaskets the machinest uses to set up the heads. Once you put everything back together, even with stock runners and plenum, you'll have room to grow without having to tear the top of the engine down again. Just a thought :)

With 107K miles (worn guides and valves) and potential cracks, I would just get some aftermarket heads. Edelbrock and TFS make some very good heads in the 1000-1200 range.
The timing chain, rockers and TPI mods are not a bad idea either. A superram is another idea worth looking into if the budget is there.
Thanks for the thoughts guys, the shop will be performing a full check on the heads and I will definately be using ARP bolts, probably new springs and guides, etc. The idea of an aftermarket intake is an excellent one, did anyone ever use AZ Speed and Marine for porting and or injector service?
Here what I'd do
1) Any aftermarket TPI base edelbrock, Accel, Bigmouth
$360 to $500 but everything else depends on a good manifold
the other option is to wait and do the miniram or LT1 conversion if you don't need emission stuff
about 10-15 hp over stock
2) cam/lifter (Comp cams 270 extreme lift on a 112deg ctr) $239 + $204 = 20-35 HP BIGGEST HP/Dollar that you can possibly do
3) aftermarket heads trickflow 23 with CNC chamber
$1200 or so but a bolt on 50 HP increase
4) Water pump - High flow design
5) Headers if you are adventurass (sp?)
