Default 1994 brake issue

I was driving my friends stock 1994 coup in auto cross yesterday. It was a good course and fast. SOOOO...driving a little aggressive for a newbie. On the 5th run we were starting to smell hot brakes. By the end of the run, the brake light came on and we had about 1 inch of brake peddle. We ended up taking the car off the track. Once off the track I popped the hood and removed the cap off the reservoir as my friend pumped the brake. The peddle jumped back up and we had full brakes again. She went out and ran her 6 runs without problems.

Today we were back at the track. She ran five good runs and then I took over. I ran 4 aggressive runs. As I was staging for the 5th run...brakes to the floor again and the brake light came on again. I tried to remove the cap again and it didn't work that time so we took the car to the parking lot. Again once in the lot I removed the cap and pumped the brakes and they came back.

We are thinking the the fluid is original and needs to be changed. Planning to change it out with DOT4.

Do you guys have any suggestions or similar experiences?

When I was autocrossing the recommendation was to change your brake fluid once a year. If you haven't done so yet, do it NOW.

:-)

Same goes for trans and rear differential fluid. Autocross is hard on vehicles, but well worth it!

Street driven vehicles - change brake fluid every two years!

Mine sees 20 - 30 track days a year and the fluid gets changed at the beginning of the season, and mid-year. Keep those fluids FRESH!!!

So, from the prior posts I would believe that this is a old fluid (or perhaps Dot3 vs Dot4) issue and not mechanical.

I plan to change out all the fluid and go to SS brake lines to replace the rubber.

Any other thoughts out there?
