Default 86 Vert tire rotation

I have an 86 vert. I need to rotate the tires, but know the rear rims are stamped "rear only", even though all the rims are 9.5". Can I indeed rotate the rear rims and tires to the front or do I need to have the tires remounted?

Thanks!!

John

First check to see if they are directional tires ? Not very good for the tire bead to be remounted to many times if at all. If the tires are old and getting worn replace them and get an alignment.

I think GM does this on purpose. Uni-directional rims/tires can throw a wrench in the process, and if the width/circumference is off-set, then you can't even go front to back.

I'm not sure why you couldn't go front to back with the stock rims. They are the same width/circum if I'm not mistaken.

Early C4's with the base suspension had the same size tires all around, but the front wheels were 8.5" wide and the rear wheels were 9.5" wide. Cars that had the optional Z51 (and Z52 for 87-88) got the same 9.5x16 wheels at all 4 corners.

It sounds like the op's car has had a pair of 9.5" wheels added at some point. The wheel size should show on the inside along with a "Left" or "Right" designator.

You can tell the difference between the 8.5" and 9.5" wheels by looking at the depth of the area where the lug nuts are. They are about 1/2" different. I don't know the exact amount because I have Z51.

I found out about the difference in depth because a friend of mine sent out his 9.5" wheels to be chromed and got back 8.5" wheels. He compared the depth of his wheels to mine to confirm his suspicions. He was a little irritated, to say the least...

So, assuming my wheels are all 9.5", with the rear ones stamped "rear only" and the fronts only saying left or right, is there any difference between the 9.5s on the front and the ones on the rear, other than the stamping?

No. If you have 9 1/2" wheels all around and uni-directional tires, you can rotate them front to back. If you do not have uni-directional tires, you can rotate them cross-wise as well.
