I bought an entire rear assembly from a swap meet. I sold all the other parts. This rear is free to me now. My plan is to have gears put into this rear without laying the car up. My question is that I want gears for this rear. I see "thick and thin" gears. What does that mean? I am 99% sure this rear is a dana 36 with 3:07's. Could someone tell me if this is a Dana 36 with 3:07's and what brand of gears would be right? I am thinking a 3:40's ratio. Also Thick or Thin?? The car is a 1986 for the street with the stock rear. I think 2:54. Not a track car.
I know why did I buy it if I wasn't sure. I knew if it wasn't right I couldn't loose. Money talks at swap meets.

You have a "3 series " carrier so you can install any ratio ;
3.07 - 3.73 using regular "thin " gears.
Aftermarket "thick " gears are used if installing 3.07+ gears on a "2 series"
carrier as in your old diff w/ 2.59's

I would give serious consideration to running the 3.07's as is to see what you think.
They are the recommended ratio for a stock TPI and give noticeable SOTP improvement over the 2.59's
if I use this differntial I can use "thinner gears"
I think I got it....
Thick vs thin is only for aftermarket identification
Thin are stock factory style gear
When the factory changed ratios they changed the ring gear carrier to suit;
as noted the aftermarket " thick' gears allow you to do a gear change without the carrier swap.

This is the best advice you'll get bar none, the most common mistake is to put too much gear in an L98. Tall gears are for LTs unless you have specific mods to take advantage of more gearing. As an example, I went from 2.73s to 3.07s when my motor was stock & it felt like 20+ HP & I still got 28-29 mpg on the freeway. Your SOTP feel will be even greater than mine because of your higher initial ratio
