1990 w/34000 miles. ABS light stayed on when I started it today. It was not on last time I drove it a month ago. Can't get it to flash codes. All wiring and solenoids look tight and clean. Manual talks about not being able to pull codes when certian codes are present, only a Tech 1 will acsess these codes. Any of you encountered this problem and what can I look for. BTW, where is the "J" fusible link that the manual says to check before begining any diagnostic checks?
The ABS can throw it's own codes, as in they don't go to the ECM. You can ask a shop if they have an ABS code reader and if they will do it. However, before you go to the shop you need to do a few things yourself. I agree with seabright that it more than likely has something to do with your brake fluid. Look in the resevuair. Check for low level and contaminants. You might end up doing a brake system flush. Here is an article from this forum about a guy doing a flush on a 92. It might help.
make sure you don;t have an accumalation of grease or crud around the sensor ring on the hub. A common problem is grease on the ring that collects dirt and causes the magnetic signal to be lost. Also worn wheel bearings will pull the ring out of the sensor tracking area and that will cause the light to come up. If bearings get too loose the ring will actually knock off the tip of the sensor. You do not want to start looking for C4 ABS parts...some yrs were orphaned by GM and Bosch, and there is no aftermarket supply available...salvage yard only.
Ck the fluid as suggested and see if the next trip does the same. The ABS does a self test at start up and will cycle the pump (growl at 1st movement) as soon as the car rolls to 3 mph or more. If ANYTHING fails the self test it will set the ABS lite.
