Hello everyone! just as the title suggests, which would give me the sound I am looking for: Flowmaster 40's series or simple muffler eliminators? common sense tells me the muffler eliminators would be cheaper, but not sure it it's too raspy of a sound. I will most likely gut my catalytic convertors, just worried it would be too loud.....any input would be greatly appreciated! video's or audio clips even better!
Thanks!

Okay, point taken. my bad....I want the somewhat raspy sound of a "Flowmaster" but inexpensively if at all possible, but If I must, I'll buy the Flowmaster's and be done with it. thanks for the clarification!
Ben
Going with eliminators won't cost a lot of money; a muffler shop should only charge $30-$50 to remove the stock mufflers and install straight pipe. Try them and if you don't like it, go with something else. I would go with something besides Flowmasters as I just don't care for the sound.
If you go with muffler elims, keep the cats as they will help to cut down on exhaust noise.
The muff elimenators do provide a nice sound under accelleration and at idle and even cruising BUT they DO droan and roar while cruising making a stereo or cell ph useless. It tends to make you tired after an hour. Defintately the cheapest option and good for some folks. I just got bored with them, and had them cut out and replaced by some shops brand of flowmaster clone mufflers. Much easier to live with now IMO.
This may not be a perfect representation of what you are looking for, but it is a Flowmaster Force II cat-back. I love the sound of my "Flows". http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hPaAoSQcq5g
If it's too loud, you're too old.
For great sound, it's hard to beat Corsa. I use straight pipes from my Hedman long tube headers (no cats) and tie them into a flowmaster resonator where the center cat used to be, and then straight out to a pair of Corsa mufflers. Absolutely no resonance and you can carry on a conversation or listen to the radio while cruising, but when you go to WOT the sound is excellent!

I just got flowmaster 40's on my '86. it's loud, the system is straight pipes back to the "flows" with no cats. It sounds very deep at idle-2000 rpm but starts to get raspy after that, sounds like a vette should.
Here is a really corny cold start vid I did a couple winters ago...good idle sound. Some serious HP in my barn... FYI, yes that is a bag on my foot, I don't want crap in my car and yes the FX3 shocks don't like 15 degree days.
