One morning I started up my '86 and within a minute, it died on me. The car will crank, but not turn over. The dash lights dont come on. The fuel pump is working fine. As a temporary fix to keep my car running, I hooked up a wire running from the battery, through the car to a toggle switch, and then straight to the distributor. What would cause the dash lights to not come on or the ignition to not send a signal to the distributor? I had a friend diagnose it, and he said that is was most likely security related. I have already tried disconnecting the negative battery cable to reset it.
not going to be securrity related. you are loosing voltage somewhere I do not have a manual close but you need to see where the wire that feeds the dist goes. I know it starts at the Ing swwitch but do not know if it is direct or has branches else where.
dirty or worn ign switch at bottom of steering column
You are not getting power out of the Ign switch on Run ; the fact the dash doesn't light up proves that.
The power supply to the switch ( fusible link) is obvious OK because you say it will crank over and the starter circuit uses the same power source that supplies the Ign switch.
Check for 12V on the pink wire out of switch when key turned on

So if I am not getting 12V out of the pink wire under the steering column, then that could only mean that my ignition switch that is bad, right?
