Is removing the screen from the MAF sensor a good idea? I mean do the rewards out way the risks involved, if any? I know that the aftermarket MAFs don't have any screens but is the increase in air flow with a stocker that great?
I just hate to screw somthing up, and have to replace one at a cosiderable cost. :nonod:
the unit flows somthin like 529cfm stock, 711cfm completely modified. The risk is, the complete modification, you have to cut out the heat sinks, which i would not do. If you screw up the element adjacent to them, youll be buying a new MAF. You can just remove the two screens, and itll still flow close to 700cfm i think.
Id do it, but unless you do a K&N and open lid, it wont help.
My method to gut the MAF is on my site; as stated I was very careful to cover each end of the center duct with duct tape to protect the delicate sensor wires within. Then clean all Al dust from within the MAF body after removing the fins before removing the duct tape. Take your time and work carefully.
Thereafter never run the engine with the air filter removed; it will keep debris from getting into the MAF.
With a stroker, assuming you mean 383, I'd expect to see some gains from this mod. Even if your motor doesn't pull the the full 750cfm of a gutted MAF I'd expect a little better throttle response since the initial inrush of air would be quicker.
BTW, you can buy a reconditioned MAF for $150-$165.
