Default rear clunk

I have an 88 vette and get a rear clunk when i shift from od to its complimentary gear. for example when decelerating from 3 od to 3 regular i get a loud clunk . sounds like the left rear. i also get a little clink from the same side when starting off

any ideas?

shop says ujoints are ok

There is a teflon coated washer between the rear spindles and knuckle. That washer was gone from my vette when I bought it. It was dealers only item and was dirt cheap. When I replaced those washers my popping sound went away. I am running a ZF6 though. It was cheap and easy to fix.

Check your drivetrain. The whole enchilada, tranny, driveshaft, U-joints, C-Beam, batwing, etc.

The teflon washers go bad but, before you buy and install them try on re-torquing the spindle nut.

My OD doesnt exactly clunk but I can definitely tell when it shifts out even with the clutch engaged. As for the washers just use the search function, select advanced type in teflon washer in the box, scroll down to bottom right and select the C4 Tech or General and look for the thread with the part number.

I'll make it easier for ya. I just opened my FSM to get a receipt out and on top is the washer number GM14976924. Order 4 and send 2 to me for being so helpful, lol.

Search anyway there are a lot of pics of the washer installs. They were added for later (88 up?) models as standard.
