Default reading codes???

This might sound like a stupid question, but I read a lot of talk of reading codes to solve problems here. I am new to the C4 section as I just got an 88 convertible and all the technology that came with it. How do you read the codes? Can you get some kind of computer to plug into the car? If so, where do I get one?

You don't need a code reader to do this. First of all, you should find a plug about where your right knee is when you sit in the driver's seat. There should be a cover over it that just slips off. You will see that you can plug a scanner into this.

Just bend a paperclip into a "U" and insert it into the two pin openings at the top to the far right. If you have a manual the are labeled "A" and "B". Now, it you turn on the key (don't start the car). Your check engine light will flash. It should flash once then followed by two quick flashes. This will happen three (3) times. This is a code 12 which indicates that the computer is functioning. Any trouble codes will flash three times after this. When all the trouble codes have been flashed, the system will flash the 12 again three times. Now just look up the codes. Remember to pull out the paperclip and put the cover back on.

The think you have to remember or take into consideration is that a code will tell you the general system where there is a problem. As an example, it might say that you have a O2 sensor problem. The sensor might be good. There would be several other areas to check within this system, such as the ground for the sensor.

To clear all the codes in the computer. Disconnect the NEGATIVE terminal on the battery for about 2 minutes and then reconnect it. That will clear all the codes from the computer.
