Default 91 Custer Issues

Hello All,

I've gone through several posts on the clusters and see some similar behavior issues but nothing exact.

My cluster never shows properly. I see fragments of the Odometer, fuel level and other readouts in the LCD.

Now the weird part, it clears up significantly when I hit about half a tank. It's not perfect but almost readable.

The small print like the mileage or trip meter is always partial characters.

I'm not sure if I should pull it out and start looking for ground issues, bad resistors, power supplies or just send it out for repair.

To be honest, I find the black font on the orange background difficult to see in the sun anyway. Maybe it would be ok if the black was bold and complete but alternatively, I would like to see if there are any aftermarket displays out there with higher contrast.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance,

Kennedy

Does it change when you hit a bump in the road?

No, the only time it changes is when I get to half a tank.

I mistakenly replied to a dead thread on gas tank pressure but that is my only lead so far. When I hit half a tank, the display gets much better but never perfect.

I think I need to pull it and start trying to find the problem but to be honest, pulling will be easy by comparison to diagnosing the problem. I'm not sure where to even start when it comes to electrical type problems.

The ECM feeds the cluster raw info and it creates the number. I don't think it's a connection issue. Your cluster might be starting to go out.

There are other options out there, but they will get a little expensive.

Thanks navy_vette, that's a great link to have. I wonder how they figured out how to take the "raw info" from the ECM and translate that into analog gauges.

I guess my options are now to look for someone who might rebuild the LCD or consider replacement with something like these.

Very nice looking though.

Thanks again for the link

It's just a voltage. Analog gauges use the voltage to power an inductor that causes movement at the base of the needle. It's basically works like a 1 sided VERY small electric motor.

Digital uses a stepped gate circuit. Ones and zeros kind of thing. It's something like .1 volt increase = 1 mph. I've dealt with these kinds of displays for most of my career. They are a PITA and it would take me a day to explain it in person, a lot longer like this.

P.S.
I've been looking at the 6 gauge setup for my 91, but I want them to use diamond plate and powder coat it black. I think it would look sweet!

Do they make a 91 cluster that isn't on their website?

I had a problem with mine where it would scramble and it was affected by bumpy roads. As time went on it got worse. Sent the gauge pod off for repair got it back and still had the same problem. Turned out that the connection to the CCM behind the radio was the problem. I found it by moving the connections around. Don't know if that is the problem with yours but it would sure be cheaper than replacement.

I saw a text reference to one but no picture.

I also found a reference in a Hot Rod magazine to Dakota Digital but I haven't looked yet...

That's my next task

I'll have to look. Either way I need to start digging into the cluster.
