A long piece of wood that smacks a baseball usually located in a ballpark or the Battery. If a battery it usually refers to the Pos (+) terminal.

The manual is refering to the battery (BAT) positive (+) cable connection --as "1963SS" stated

Since the starter is used when checking compression I'm unsure why the manual would want the battery disconnected ??---remove the coil wire and have at it.

Yes, the manual want you disconnect the distributor connector (4 wire), but how you rotate the motor if your battery is disconnected ?

Pink wire at coil? White wire is Tach I believe the pink is labeled BAT and is the 12v source for the coil.

You use a BAW

Big *** wrench.

There is a bolt on your crank shaft balance. Remember, the chevy motor rotates counter clockwise in relation to you WHEN YOU ARE IN THE CAR.

Really, to do a compression test just pull the coil wire and crank the engine.

1) Remove coil wire
2) Remove plugs
3) Open throttle
4) Screw compression tester into spark plug hole
5) Turn engine over using the key
6) Record cylinder number and pressure reading
7) Repeat seven more times in different spark plug holes

You're looking for all cylinders to be about equal with not much more than 10% difference between all readings.

And then there's the "Wet Test".
