Can I replace this seal without removing the timing cover? It has a nasty leak and I would like to replace it while the waterpump is off. Basically, does it go onto the timing cover from the front or only from the inside of the cover once removed?
I can't find an answer, only that I need to protect the seal from the splines. And I'm not sure how that tool or marker cap is used...

What year?
On the LTx it just pulls out whith the waterpump off.
To put it back on there is an expensive rare tool or you can use the body of a dry erase marker.
You can also use a .410 shotgun shell to put the new seal on. It's a perfect diameter. Just be careful when emptying it and cutting the plastic. I know because i was in a hurry and didn't have either the tool or a marker at the time. Hillbillies.........Geesh

Do a search and you should even find pictures!
Pop the old one out, install the new one as outlined in the numerous threads on the topic.
Thanks guys! I'm trying do this on the cheap. I was going to get a Meziere WP, but it seems like leaving the drive gear in without the waterpump support isn't the best idea. I'm just trying to get the car back together cheaply, not the way I like to do it, but it's my dad's car.
Remove the old seal with a small screw driver and slide the new seal onto the seal tool and then slide the tool and seal onto the drive shaft, then slide the seal into place, you do not need to use any oil, when you slide the new seal onto the tool make sure both lips of the seal are pointing to the outside edges of the tool before you go any further. when you have it firmly in place lightly tap the seal with a socket of the same diameter until it is fully seated. I sell the tool if you would like one just let me know. waynehigson@comcast.net

If you pay the shipping I will send you a tool you can use to put your seal in. doesnt get any cheaper than that.
Use a $2 funnel from any hardware/auto store. Slip the new seal over the funnel spout until it is snug. Mark around the seal w/ a perma pen, then after removing seal cut the funnel spout at the mark. You now have a perfect (and I mean absolutely perfect) tool to mount the seal. Takes 2 minutes.

Man, I just love the creativity on this forum. I've never even though of a funnel but it would be "perfect". Cool, really cool.
