I have an 86 l98 and when i first fire it up it'll idle at 800-900rpm but as it gets hotter, the idle starts getting rougher, especially if it's in gear (automatic btw). If I sit at a stop light I have to put it in neutral otherwise it starts to act like it's going to die. I replaced the fuel filter and that helped a little, it was at 600-700 rpm.
If your fuel filter is plugged, you might have dirty injectors as well, but let's check the easier things first.
Check codes. It's the big first step.
Check fuel pressure. You can get a gauge at.... well, just about anywhere...
Should be 43 PSI at idle. It will drop a bit under acceleration, but not much. The needle should never jump around erratically.
On the back of your fuel rail is the fuel pressure regulator. Pull the vacuum line off. If there is fuel in the line, then the diaphram in there is bad.
These tests can be done within 15 mins. That is of course after you get the fuel pressure gauge.
