Default I think Comp sux too! With Pics

There was a thread a while back where a broken Comp spring destroyed and engine. Well....many were on the wire with that one. Too many variables and not enough experience were the highlights of the thread.

I've got a story similar.........but different. I had a Comp XFI 280 cam in my car. I don't like single springs but I let Comp talk me into the recommended springs. Beehives or Hornets nests or some such silliness. They died and lost most of their pressure even though my build sheet showed a 1.790 installed height (1.800 recommended). The spring pressures were correct but they just didn't like the ramp speed of that cam.

Now comes the new Comp episode. A pushrod tip came off. No biggie, usually but these were the super-duper, heavy duty one piece hardened pushrods. Not supposed to have tips to fall off.

I was working on my newly rebuilt engine:

I was working on the top end because I was going to try to calm down the noisy valve train a bit. I am swapping out the Comp Pro-Mags (Stainless) for some Lunati Voodoo Aluminum roller rockers. I figured the aluminum would be more "dead" sound wise than the stainless.

I checked Google to see if that was true and as usual it was abour 50/50 on yea or nea. I'll do my own test thank you.

I got to number 3 cylinder and loosened the polylock and took off the Pro-Mag rocker. A liece fell out of it and I'm like....WTF. They're one piece with no tips on them. What could have broke..........well, it's the tip.

Notice how perfectly it's broken. I couldn't have taken a lathe and did a better job.

I mean really, WTF. How could a one piece, no tip pushrod do that so cleanly.

Everything was set up perfectly, preload was .030" and springs were 1.800", 400# with 150 on the seat. A Comp cam, Comp pushrods and Comp rockers. I called Comp and they said they had no problem with them. That's all. No offers, no nothing. Their support sux out loud. I can hear it sucking from here.

It's not about the money or a freebie or anything. The new pushrod only costs about six bucks but they should have shown more concern. I'm probably done with those jack-legs because of their service after the sale. I'll use Lunati, Morel, or even Chinese before I go back to that bunch of retards. Vent off........cooling down........don't shoot anyone Gunny.....put the .45 down and hide the select fire M-14. It's just Comp Cams and not the Post Office

Gunny,

I used to love CC stuff.
Made good horspower & torque.

I can't say for sure,
but I suspect oversees low quality metal stock has made its way back to the USA.
Our own recycled metal prior.

You run them hard like I do.

Valve float occurred because spring pressure went south or relaxed in your engine case.

Probably what broke the tips off on the CC RC 60 1- piece pushrods.
Maybe made from cheep oversees steel too.

Crower & Isky for me only my friend.
Its expensive stuff yes.
But better than failures like otherts have had happen to them here on C4 & racetracks here in Illinois I have seen or witnessed 1st hand.

Your a handgun & rifle expert I forgot Gunny.

I found also the perfectly punched out piece of glass that the bullet did my 1963 Grand Prix back window in.

Was a large caliber bullet I am told.

When I get together for a Beer with You,
I will show you that piece of round punched out glass.
The window is 5/16 " tempered glass too.

LOL

Good thing I am crazy too..............

It would have had to been valve float with the old Beehives. The new springs are holding in just fine. Still around 400#'s and 150#'s. I've not been over 6000 with the new engine yet and this wasn't broken when I put it together last week. POS Comp Cams garbage.

Looking forward to that beer. Let me get the new engine in the Vette and I'll meet you half way and we can have a weekend bench racing BS session from Hell. Road trip....road trip...roadtrip

Mmmmmm.....select fire M14, nice gun, just doesn't shoot very straight on full auto.

I really like match grade M14's.....iron sights and 1000 yard shots....that is cool.

Doesn't have to. It will drop a deer at 300 yards shooting from the hip. 18 rounds....or so I've heard from a friend of mine. The flash suppressor does have 3 slots up and 2 down. That balances the walk pretty well once you get used to it. It was my issued weapon in 1965.

Its a shame Crane is gone. I would not trust Comp for anything, after reading all these stories lately. I guess if I was buying valve train parts I'd be in trouble since I dont trust any of the vendors out there.

Thanks to pirates and the inability of the world's navies to deal with the scum, part of my job discription now requires me to qualify with a M14. One of it's overlooked atrtibutes is that it can launch a line throwing appartatus. Now that might come in handy.

I think I read that S&S bought them out. They were using the Crane electronics for motorcycle engines. I hope Crane comes back strong.

I'm a sailor and am rel familiar with the Gulf of Aden situation. I've had friends transit near there. I'd love to throw some pirates a line with the old M-14. Just duct tape a clothesline to a grenade and launch it right to them. It shoots grenades also. Gotta little scar on my forehead to prove that it kicks when it does.

Yes Jack,

S & S cycles saved Crane.

You know Obama was not going to dammit.

Have to do current business with Crane Cams or they will fail.

They need purchases made to keep or justify their existance.

Why I preach to all here on C4 >>>>>>>>Buy American made only.

No one is going to save the USA.

Just us on C4 and the others that listen too.

Thanks for the reinforcement. Yes, I was a little irate yesterday but I've calmed down some. I don't want anything in return but I would have expected them to at least want to do some testing on the broken part. This issue is is no more than a customer service failure. A six dollar part is not the end of the world.

I realize that those guys get calls from Jack Legs all day blaming Comp for improper installation, Fires in Texas and Tsunami's in Japan. They have much more patience that I do but to just brush me off really irritated me. Oh well, all's calm on the Southern front. I've sent customer service a nice e-mail (really) and we'll see what they say.

When a co. gets too big there will be lots of outsourcing bean counters and in the end more failed parts.

Have Comp doubles in now but first $ I get some Iskys or similar will be going in. A 10 buck part can lose you a $10k motor real quick.

Hope they do something for you!!

never did hear if they took care of Trackman or not.

WOW, I'm confused. I just replied to a post that I saw from Cuisinart. I know I saw it or I wouldn't have responded. How did his post get to be after mine?? Check the time. It doesn't show as edited.Am I turning into a psychic? I wasn't going to drink today but now I've got an excuse.

Is that really a one piece pushrod? A faulty weld with an inclusion(or a solid piece with an inclusion) could lead to a compressive failure with a very clean fracture. I am surprised that a company wouldn't want a failed part like that back for failure analysis. It says a lot about their quality process not to want to examine a material failure.

comp is pure junk IMHO,I would buy crane, isky, lunati all day long before I would shell out one dime on comp.look on the internet most failures are from comp and they used to be a great company but it looks like greed has got the best of them and a lot of other companys in the u.s.
