Ok guys, there is nothing wrong with my current 92 Opti, but I am going to be trying once again to fix an oil leak, and while I'm in there I am going to be installing my gear drive. Installing the gear drive means that I have to install the late model Opti. I am going to have all of the parts and I know the install will be very straightforward. What I am curious about is what do you do with the vent?
Where is a good place to connect into a vacuum line that won't cause any problems? I know the F-bodies just go into the intake ducting, but I don't really like that idea.
I just drilled (very small bit) a hole in the intake behind the MAF. That's where the 95/96 Opti's are plugged. I think one of the Tech Tips takes the hose back through the firewall into the passenger compartment and connects it to a fuel filter (seems overkill to me). With the vacuum limiter, it might not suck enough air to pull through a fuel filter.
For the vacuum, the 95/96 seem to be connected to a port under the Throttle Body. I ran the hose back under the injector covers and over the battery box to the autopilot (speed control). Others have used the vacuum supply (oximoron?) in the center of the drivers side plenum for the EGR. I couldn't find fittings at the time. (I may switch to there later.)
I suggest you get the kit that gm sells for the vent system. It has a device on it to limit the vacuum it pulls inside the distributor. I rigged up my own setup which destroyed the cap when the inlet got clogged. The cap will press down on the rotor when the vacuum gets high enough in the distributor.
Run the inlet line to a point right behind the MAF as suggested. Then run the vacuum side to a T on the intake.
