Can anyone identify the door wiring harness part # on an 87 coupe, and check to see if other years can work. Had a door replaced at a Chevrolet Body repair facility and now they can not get the door light and hatch release to work. My "guess" is that they used a wrong year door? And they do not have the personnel to investigate and "fix it".
In my 89.. the door harness was part of the dash harness..
not sure on your 87 but my 89 had 2 door switches.. On in the jamb at the front of the door. That operated the lights. then there was one in the door near the hatch release that controlled the Alarm and the hatch release. woith out that door mounted one, the hatch will not release from the door switch.
Your 87 has 3 switches on the actual door itself, and 1 in the doorjam. Thw switch on the very rear of the door that you slide down is for the hatch. Then there is a little round button switch on the inside edge that contacts the car when shut. That is the DOOR AJAR switch. Mine were stuck when I got the car and some motor oil and a scrwedriver popped it out and works great now. Then in the doorjam, that switch is used for your courtesy lights and alarm.
Thanks guys.............that helps alot. It appears (as I suspected) that year specific harnesses are needed. which would explain the problem I have. You would think a Chevy dealer would know! Well..........maybe not! :smash:
Hatch release...try this. Operate right hand door switch, and glovebox button, this should operate the hatch. Also look at information panel upper right-hand corner for a light. The electrical connectors are behind the door panel. White wire from the switch to the connector on the door - solid brown wire goes into a 8 cavity connector on the door. This should tell you if the wiring is good up to the center of the door.
Door light - check for bad light bulb and check for power at the bulb. The left hand jamb door switch has 3 terminals. No 3 position-white wire, right hand jamb switch No 3 position-white wire. These two wires are hooked at terminal D courtesy light delay timer near the multi-use center right hand side of I/P. Note: try to avoid damaging jamb switches - the wire disconnects are different.
Not sure I follow your info on the wires, or how to trace? Is there a connection under the dash for the door harness?
I can open hatch with console button only (neither door hatch switch works) and door/interior lights will come on only with manual control from dash switch (neither door switch will activate). So, they are getting power from somewhere, but not to door switchs. And why other side does not work either is a mystery? Any ideas appreciated, but I think the Chevy dealer may have used the wrong year door/wiring harness.
In order to use the door mounted switches for the hatch the lights must be on. The ground path for these switches is through the main light switch or the delay timer. Try turning the light switch on the dash then try the hatch switch. Sounds to me like a bad timer. Also check the HATCH, GAGES, CTSY/CLK fuses
I tried your suggestions, but no luck. Neither hatch switch works with the lights on. And I recall that they worked with the lights off before the door replacement. All fuses are OK? Anyone have any ideas?
Sorry for confusion to make it easier the timer may be your problem. The timer is located in the area of bread box hooked to large bundle of wires. The timer has 5 wires ( a/white c/orange e/pink&black stripe, b/black (ground) d 2 white wires joined together.) a ,c e, b and d are terminal identification. Hatch c/b 30 amp orange wire-terminal B goes to hatch release relay on the rear deck. Terminal "a" brown wire goes through connector becomes brown & white stripe. On rt side near the bread box of door opening look for wire splice. Here the wires tee off and go to respective hatch switches via connector then goes solid brown to door sw.
Check for power terminal "D" -two white wires for battery power, wires are for left & right jamb switch. Also, terminal "B" black wire-make sure ground is good.
Thanks for the help and I am making some progress. With interior lights turned on from dash switch, door hatch switch works and interior lights work. Sounds like it is the circuit (ground?) through timer as you guys suggested. Is access to replace timer through Info panel or breadbox? :)
