The mod being removal of frisbee and timing adjustment. Well the results of my highly scientific ride around the block. Yes BIG diference believe it or not it felt stronger pulling from 40 mph up and from a stop I couldnt tell since i had to steer the car straight as it fishtailed out to the right for about 20 feet the power really does disappear over about 4500 rpm dont it. But thats it for those wondering. If ya didnt do it do it. :D
Sorry for my lack of knowledge (Hey, you guys teach me new things every day), but what exactly did you do? What do you mean when you say "frisbee," and could you email me how you took out your timing adjustment? Thanks in advance...
Alright! although i really didnt want to run it Ill get the car to atco and get a time some time soon. It will be interesting to know.
Lamp,
The "frisbee" is the term we gave the metal damper dics bolted to the water pump pulley on 89-91. It weighs a pound or two by requires some horsepower to get it turning so if you remove it you gain that power. It doesnt serve a useful purpose and you dont need it. As for the timing
start car
find tan/black wire in harness near brake booster for EST and disconnect it
put timing light on #1 wire
aim at timing tab on balancer(if you can read it)
loosen distributor hold down bolt
turn distributor CCW slightly and chek timing again set at 8*
remove timing light
tighten dist
turn off car
connect EST
test drive
I think thats it. Hope it helps.
:smash:
I am not quite getting the timing adjustment, and I do not have the dampners off either. I do not think I'll screw with the timing, but can you show me a picture of the discs that you took off...as in where they're located??? I dont understand all the brake booster stuff. Maybe I need to just learn the stuff myself as I go, worry about tooling with it later eh?
I was lucky i just held it with my hand and took all four out easily. You could try grabbing the edge with visegrips. or put one wrench on one bolt while you loosen another with another(that makes sense rite?) :smash: BTW how did you make out with the timing adjustment?
Just a note. The round disk you speak of came on 88-91 engines. Not just 89-91. Not that it really matters.
The disk does have a function. The water pump pulley that it is bolted to was not heavy enough to cancel any harmonics that may be caused by the water pump. They put that thing there to kill any harmonics that may acure. Note I have taken mine off, and notice no problems.
As for HP gains. I don't thhink it's much if any. The disk does come in around 8-10+ LBS on the 88's. The 90-91 disk is different. I often wonder if the rotating mass can/does help. Ex: turning the water pump can be hard, but once that thing is spining the force the mass creates from spining may just aid the engine in turning the water pump inpellers?
Just like a heavy flywheel takes more to get it going, but having more mass to keep it going once the clutch engages is nice.
Bottom line it's in the way if you work on the car a lot so take it off.
