Default Another obx headers thread....

hey guys, been looking at these headers waiting it out to see if there was something wrong or cheap about them and nothing has come up. Seriously thinking about buying them. Question is...

I'm almost positive they arent ceramic coated... Could i just wrap them in some kind of exhaust wrap and call it a day. From what i understand the coating just keeps the temps down. As long as they are stainless I wont have any durability issues.

Anyone know of a place in the carolinas or georgia where i could get it tuned afterwards?

Is there any real difference between a 3" or 2.5" (OBX) collectors?

Similarly, 1.75" or 1.5" (OBX) primary tubes?

I vote , read the other threads, post in the threads of members that are running them, call obx, ones 3" the other is 2.5" same with 1.75 and 1.5, if whatever size exhaust pipe you are running is smaller than the collector , you will only flow that amount, if thats your only mod, probably wont need much of a tune, o2 and ecm should pick it up, if you're running them thru stock mufflers , others will chime in ....I'm sure

You beat me to it. Ive read so much about OBX headers that I feel that I already bought them and installed them. All others are very satisfied with them.

I got them installed 2 weeks ago, they are great and needed no tune. Going to the Drags Friday night to see hopefully what kind of improvement they make in ET.

Had my OBX headers on now about 6 weeks[300 mi.]with no issues.I dont think you need to coat them, they will turn a light gold color.Be sure to clean them good befor you fire up,I let sweat drop on mine as I was finising up and the salt cooked in and shows up.Be prepared to make some tools:a 5/8 box end will need to be ground in a cone shape to install plugs 1&2 ,have on hand 10ea.allen bolts 1in.ss.A headed bolt will not fit in most cases.Install the rear bolt on#4 first ,this is the only way it will start.I have an LT4, the 1 1/2 in. pipe has the volumn for the exaust port, however you will need to allow some time for porting these headers to fit at the top[about 3/16in] and two small places in the bottom corners[about 1/8in].TheOBX headers only come with 3ea. o2 boungs, I patched in the wires from #4 o2 to #3 and it seems to have fooled the computer,Car runs great, you will feel the difference in the seat of your pants.Good up grade and a fun project,I give them a 10.....O yea ,they go in from the top,big improvement from years ago.

the only issue with the OBX headers - correct-me-if-im-wrong, is that they are 1 5/8".

I imagine this is fine if you are building a N/A mild cam l98 or ltx build.

I think you'd be better off spending the money on 1 3/4" headers if you are planning something wild (or may in the future plan something wild).

I bought TPIS long tube 1 3/4" primary headers back in 2002. They were the best back then. I must have paid $800 for these things. They did come coated and fit perfectly. No need to hammer any pipes or anyting to get them to fit.

35000 miles later, they are good except the jet hot coating has chipped in a few places.

We did not have stainless ARH headers like we do now

The only downfall to this is that if your car leaks oil, it can coat your headers and become a fire hazard.

Ive heard stories (not sure if true or if urban-legend) of cars burning down do to oil-soaked header wrap.

A place near me does the same coating as Jet Hot , did inside and out for $220, not even worth thinking about wrap for that price

yeah that was the next thing i was gonna ask. Im planning as of now just doing mild things. Just the corsa exhaust ive got on now and these headers and maybe alittle here in there. Not planning on diving into the engine or anything.

Tuning near Raleigh NC would be either Mayhem Motorsports(did mine) or RPM(excellent shop as well). You can go to www.horsepowerjunkies.com for more info as they are site sponsors there and get some other recommendations closer if need be.It is a somewhat local based forum(not for the faint of heart)for NC,SC,and VA(though there are members all over).

The headers were the only recent one that took me from a 13.6 to a 13.2. I also have an X pipe, magnaflow mufflers, no cats, 307 rear and an SLP Claw. Thank you for your comment, it really makes me feel good being it was only my third time at the drag strip and feeling like a Grandfather to most there in line waiting to run.

is it an x-pipe on a stock lt1 exhaust?

If so, where did you get the x-pipe frm?

Im thinking about doing that. I can weld, the prob is you need a narrow x-pipe because the pipes come together so close on the ltx exhaust.

Cngrats on the new best time! Unfortunately for me, dragway42 (medina, ohio area) seems to have shut down test/tune nights early in the season. Is a shame because the best air is right now!

I had an exhaust shop make it take out the stock resonater and install it. The only thing stock about the exhaust are the pipes from the X back to the axle and yes the cool air last night had a lot to do with the great times.

I believe Jegs and/or summit racing(at least one of them does)have a narrow x-pipe that looks like it will work in the tunnel.
