Default Rough Idle And Backfire after degreasing?

Hi all, yesterday I degreased the engine compartment, rinsed and dried then went for a cruise. After about 20 miles I started feeling some rough idle which 5 miles later turned into back fire at lower rpms... She runs fine at higher rpms. Theres a strong smell coming from the exhaust as well and a friend who was driving behind me said after.each backfire "something milky" would splatter on his window O.O help?

you're lucky it still starts. I would open the hood for 2-3 days to let all the water dry out.

I would take a air hose and dry out the cap and rotor and see how that does for you.

What engine do you have?

Also, please fill out your User CP profile so the folks here will know what MY and engine you need help with.

I learned the hardway that the L98 doesn't like a bath. I thought I was being careful but water got past the air filter. It ran very rough and smoked a lot. I thought I'd ruined a very expensive MAF sensor. I dried everything as much as I could and replaced the air filter which was soaked. After running it very gently for about 10 miles, everything finally got back to normal. No more engine washes. Good luck.

Did the same thing with a 94. Opti wasn't happy. Dry it with a heat gun or hair dryer and cross your fingers. Hopefully you won't have to replace it (assuming you have an opti).
