How to find Courtesy Delay Timer
First things first, I have a 1988 coupe. Your model may vary.
Armed with these instructions, shouldn't take you more than 10 minutes. And that's after you spend 5 minutes looking for your tools. Tools you'll need:
- 7mm socket
- 10mm socket
- 6 inch or larger socket extension
- socket wrench
- mirror - If you can't find one, your wife or girlfriend will have one for their makeup or hair. I used a 2 inch mirror, thats all you need.
- Flash light.
1 - Take off the panel attached to the carped knee bolster with the 7mm socket. Think there is 3 or 4 screws.
2 - Disconnect the courtesy light harness under the panel you just removed so you can place the panel in a safe place.
3 - Now you could try and stick your head under the dash to look underneath, but there just isn't enough room to really see anything. This is where the mirror and flashlight comes in handy. Using the mirror, look under the dash and you'll see a bunch of wires, and I mean a bunch, attached to some rectangular device. That is the ecm. And that is all about you'll see under there. On both ends of the ecm you'll see two screws. Using the 10mm socket and socket extension, remove these screws. Just use the mirror to line up the socket with these screws. No need to try and squeeze your head and arms under there.
4 - The ecm should be dropping out. Don't worry about disconnecting the wiring harnesses, the wires are long enough to drop down. Just make sure there are no other wires blocking the ecm from lowering.
5 - Now you could use the mirror to look on the underside lip of the knee bolster for the Courtesy Delay Timer. It's a small box about 2x2x1/2. You can also just feel around for it with your hand. Mine was right in the center.
6 - You should be able to pull it down just enough, below the lip of the knee bolster. The full box should be visible, and maybe just a little bit of the wiring harness if you really want to see what color wires you have.
7 - Verify you have the right box. It'll have one of three numbers on it: 10098435, 14066560 or 14080625. I had 14080625.
That's it. After disconnecting, and cleaning up the contacts, it worked. If yours still does not work, then you can purchase a replacement board for about $40 from your favorite supplier.
Hope this makes it easier for you.
I just reached up and pulled my delay timer down to get a look at it. And low and behold, my courtesy lights came on and go off after a delay like they should now. Just fumbling around with the timer has allowed it to function again.
As a bonus, the hatch release switches on the doors are working again also.
