Default 1994 ZF6 Reverse Lockout Rod

Hi all, I hope I don't get flamed for this, but I was wondering if there were any instructions or possibly even a DIY on how to remove the reverse lockout feature? I know how to remove the ****, and the lockout collar, but how about the lockout rod itself? Does the console trim, shift boot, etc.. need to be removed to access the mechanism?

I understand a Hurst, B&M, or ZFdoc short throw shifter can eliminate the reverse lockout all together, but I was wondering if it can be done with the stock shifter? Will just removing the rod eliminate the feature entirely?

I've done quite a bit of searching and it seems possible, but I don't see any threads pertaining on how to go about it.

Any help is much appreciated!

I think you can remove the parts to defeat it, but it will just fall into reverse very easily. nothing to stop you from finding it when your trying to stick it into 6th at 80.

I had my shifter rod converted to a 95 one with the crash-thru reverse lockout. you really have to push hard to get into reverse with that (but you get the clean shifter).

Thanks for the info Mike. I think I will go ahead and just stick with the factory shifter for now.

I always liked the lockout... not sure why it bothers folks so much. I had a Hurst in an LT1 car I used to own, and I hated the insecure feeling when going for 6th, and worrying I was going to hit R.

Its not that I don't like it, just kind of wanted a more clean look. But its good to hear you say that, I was wondering what it would feel like without the lockout. I believe I will go ahead and keep it factory, just for peace of mind especially since it is a daily driver.

I like the lock out feature too (or at least, I have to problem with the feature)...but I HATE how the lock out ring rattles on the shifter. Grrrr.

Tom, if it rattles you may need to adjust the tiny allen head set screw on the lockout collar.

Huh. I'll have a look. Never noticed that there were any allen screws. Thanks for saying something.

Well THAT was easy! I can't believe that I've been resting a finger on the shifter for 2 years... all for THAT. Wow. Snugged it up, and voila! Quiet as can be. Thanks TT94!!
