You can remove the oil pan as it is.
No need to move the engine, you may need to remove the starter to get to a few bolts but that is about it. Go for it

- i've dropped the pan on my 85 without moving the engine. biggest problem - keeping track of the exact location of the bolts, studs, nuts, brackets, clips, etc - some 2 dozen pieces. make a mental note of this or you'll be saying "WTF" also, i recommend the felpro one-piece gasket - the only way to fly.
As said, pan comes off in normal position.May need to rotate the engine for crank clearance.I removed the hose to the oil cooler(5/8 tube running under pan).OS34500R is the perma dry felpro kit for the 88 according to Rock auto ,I've never had a problem with a one piece felpro.Lift the car as high as you can for working room.............Bob
No you don't need to raise the engine, although it's an alternative way of doing this. Everything the guys said above plus you'll need to remove both frame braces also. At least I had to my car's a stick I don't know if that matters. Don't forget to turn the crank if necessary or the pan never comes out. I made my own gasket from tube and no more leaks. Good luck.
i have an 84. drop the starter for three bolts and pull the pan. as far as a gasket,i used a can gasket once,(the right stuff) for a pan gasket. the stuff will seal up diareah on an elephant. but i about ruined the pan trying to remove it later,it took a hammer and chisel.
