troubleshooting the egr system.........

i have traced my latest problem to be the egr: the car surges at crusing speed and sometimes dies upon deceleration from a speed. Chiltons describes this exactly as symptoms for egr problems, my question is what can i do to find exactly what i need to replace to get me back to normal again.....

Remind me to look at my Helms manual for the diagnosis of that later on. I wonder if the solenoid is gone.

Most likely either the EGR solenoid or the EGR valve itself. Surging at speed sounds like the EGR solenoid is messing up: pulling the EGR pintle in and out slightly thus causing un-even induction of non combustible exhaust gasses.

My '94 Dakota pickup (5.2L) has similar symptoms. I suspect it to be either the idle air control valve or the EGR solenoid or valve.
