I got alot of tiny cracks, about 1-2mm deep on my belt. The long belt that goes around the air pump and alternator. Is it time for a replace and is it hard to replace?
Don't remember exactly but when I get about 2-3 cracks per inch I replace it but I guess you can also use the wear indicator on the belt tensioner, only problem with that I've heard some people say that the indicator is way off with a new belt. Just put a 1/2 socket wrench (think that's the size) on the tensioner (has a square hole in it) and take the tension off of the belt. Make sure you let it go very easy, it takes a little effort and it will smack your fingers pretty good if you don't grasp the wrench.
Replace it ...but don't throw it away, bunch it up, put an elastic around it and throw it in the compartment behind the seat. If you ever blow a belt in the future in the middle of nowhere you will think back and say That JonM is brilliant.
You need a 1/2 inch drive ratchet...Stick the ratchet end (no socket required) into the tensioner ...pull back and slip the old belt off...Follow the decal for routing the new belt...pull back on the tensioner and slip the new belt onto it. Should take no more then 60 seconds to do. Then go wash your hands, open a beer and enjoy the spoils of your victory.
I ALWAYS have a spare belt with me in the car :yesnod: :yesnod: :yesnod: It stays in the passenger door compartment. I guess I need to carry a wrench to move the pulley though or it's not going to do a bunch of good
