Thanks Steve
I was fishing for other's comments to see what their experiences were. I went to D&M for some specific repair needs, and they marched me right up the ladder. $770 later, some things they got right, some things they got wrong. More importantly, they treated me like they were doing me a favor and I had to chase them and beg for the car. Never going back.
I had some work done on my 85 by D&M Corvette in Downers Grove. They are corvette specific. I've heard bad things about D&M Motorsports in Lombard I think. I believe Pete in service is a good guy, they were recommended to me by Chicago Corvette Club. I have very little dealing with the showroom people. Hope that helps
They appear to be fine. Dealer wanted to replace trans because of noise issues. D&M found it was the alternator $440. Save a boat load of money. Their repl alternator was resonable. They also put in a short throw shifter, cags shift skip and cags plugs as starighten floor crossmember that got bent from rock 7.8hrs labor. Not too out of line.
I am writing in response in case their is any confusion. I am with D&M Restoration and we specialize in restoring classic car gauges including many for Corvettes but we are not the above mentioned company. Interestingly enough they are other "D&M's" out there.
There are good mechanics out there. You have to find them. Sucks but you need to do the legwork and invest the time. You cannot go with the first company that you see nor can you go to them because the service adviser gave you a warm fuzzy feeling in your toes.
I have said this time and time again. Cultivate a relationship with THE MECHANIC. Screw the service adviser. He don't know crap. The only reason I talk to the MB service adviser when taking the wife's car in is that she is a complete hottie and she knows how to work with me by asking the techs first before she commits. Before I go there, I have my friend who is an MB tech already diagnose the problem over the phone but he lives too far for me to bring it there.
You need to make friends with the person working on your car. You need to bring him donuts and coffee or whatever he eats and drinks. You need to make friends with him.
