I have a 89' with manual transmission. When I shift to reverse and back up a grade my Vette will chatter alot. In 1st gear my clutch ingages fine and does not slip. Any one have any ideas as it is quite enbarrassing the way it is .
I've got a spec stage 1 clutch and extra mass flywheel. Chatters very slightly in 1st when i pullout, but it chatters like crazy when i back up, especially if it's up a grade. Interested as well.
I just bought my 89 about 2 months ago with many miles on it. I don't know for sure if the clutch and flywheel are stock, but I believe they are. When I bought the car and test drove it, it never backed it up a grade.
If you ever have trouble shifting from 1st to 2nd gear there is a fix. GM engineered a gas saving technic that causes you to have to shift from 1st to 4th, which is suppose to save you gas. Look for a Cags skip-shift elliminator to fix that forced shifting problem.
Can anyone help with the chatter while using reverse?
Thanks

If the car has "many miles" which I am not sure what that means since you are not specific, I can assume possibly the clutch has been replaced. If the clutch has been replaced, there are few options with flywheels; most are single mass and most have "upgraded" or changed over due to availability to an aluminum piece; nice weight savings, but the alum. fw doees not dampen the ZF6speed gear rattle and if the clutch is a grabby, sticky, high performance clutch, you will get clutch chatter in reverse gear, especially on an incline when the clutch is under a load, trying to propel the car from a stop.......I would assume the the clutch is an market piece that is real grabby.....been there and done that
Does this mean to fix this problem I will need to replace the clutch and would I be better off having a cast iron (original) fly wheel? What clutch brand would you suggest? Thanks
Before you start buying parts, check the motor mounts, bellhousing and trans attachment bolts, and the bolts that attach the C-beam, both ends. Be sure the bolts are tight and the motor mounts are intact.
Also possible that the batwing (diff case) mounts are not secure.
if your not abusing it centerforce has a good feel the problem i seen with them the dampin drivtrain shock wich is good in a driver but ive had to replace a few in some hi hp cars that did a lot of hard driving and every one the clutch looked good but the owner complaind about slippage during burn out or drag racing with slicks
