I am between getting a new exhaust and getting muffler eliminators. Does anyone know if the eliminators are street legal in NJ?
Elims are a cool sound. On a stock engine, it's cheap and has a raspy type note. It is also easy to drive quietly. Legal? Don't know, but it's not a problem here in the Carolinas. I wouldn't go through a quiet neighborhood at 3am at 4-5000 rpms.
In NY you don't have to have a muffler to pass inspection. I'm not sure how NJ is, but I have them on my car with no precats and the main cat hollowed out and people are always giving me compliments on it. If and when I get long tubes I don't think my neighbors in my complex will like me when I leave at 530am to go to work.
I have them with no precats either. I live in New Jersey also. NJ doesn't care about anything anymore except emissions. My car goes through with no problem. They are a bit loud but; I like it......
Thanks for the help. I think the eliminators are the way I will go. Do they affect the engine at all with timing etc?
I didn't touch mine. It will run the same except you'll be more aware of the sound and, like most of us, you will probably drive it a little more aggressively.
There are three styles of muffler eliminators that I'm aware of. One is a regular old muffler shop bent pipe that is not mandrel bent, another is mandrel bent and the third type is the mandrel bent, chambered ones. I've found that the chambered ones are not as "Raspy" as the straight pipe versions. You still get the sound but it's a good deep sound and doesn't sound like a pissed off V-tec.
I put Corsa's on my Vette because I wanted quiet. (I couldn't hear my John Denver CD). I have a set of the chambered if you'd like. I'll take 75 plus shipping. They will need some cleaning but they're not bad right now. If you don't like them I'm sure you could always get your money back.

I would grab that deal and for a Christmas gift send him a JOHN DENVER'S LATEST HITS CD in stores now while they last.
