I have an 86 with 140000 that smokes consistently. I did a compression check, and I still have 150 psi. I don't think it is in the bottom end, but in the valve seats. I was wondering if any one had any advice on trouble shooting the problem!
When do you notice the smoke, at startup, at WOT, etc.
I had/have a smoking problem and found oil under the rear of the engine. When I had the base off I also found oil behind the base. Some of the smoke came from oil on the exhaust pipes.
Check under your Vette to see if you have an external oiling problem.
No leaks under the car. I was using straight 50 weight oil, and that cut down on the smoking, but I went back to using 10w-30 and it smokes like a diesel. smokes a little on start up, idle, and wot. The smoke is blueish white, and I can smell that my mixture is a little rich.
You might repeat the compression test; add a teaspoon of motor oil into the cylinder and see if it boosts it substantially.
Several weeks ago my compression check showed 162-175psi across all, on a 4-crank test.
Also, make sure your O2 sensor is OK to remove the effects of a rich mixture. If the cylinder walls are being washed it could increase consumption. Check your spark plugs to see if the deposits are oily from consumptin or sooty from a rich mixture.

Re: My car is smoking help (Marcum_Marley)
Marcum, the only problem poor value seals generate is smoke at start up...if you have smoke at WOT, its not being caused by the seals...maybe rings, pistons, blocked/malfunctioning sensor(s) but not the seals...
Well thanks guys, I was going to check the O2 sensor, and do another, more thorough compression check to see what the problem is. I have a mechanic looking at it today to give me a second opinion. I will give you the results after I figure out what the hell is going on. It is really embarassing driving a vette that smokes. Its almost sacreligous! Being a young apprentice to the 350 I still have my experience to gain. I think that it is great that I can get some experts advice.
I should have some more results soon. Keep your fingers crossed, because I hope that it is not the rings.
Anyway thanks for the help!
